1. Lansing Town Board Member

Description: The Town Board is the legislative, appropriating, governing and policy determining body of the town. A Town Board does the following:

  • Approves all laws and policies of the Town
  • Approves budget and expenses for activities required by law or by Town and determines how those expenses will be funded via property tax or other sources
  • Appoints the heads and deputies of departments of town government and any dismissals.
  • Requires reports from the supervisor concerning the conduct of the official business of the town and the performance by town officers and employees of their functions, powers, and duties.
  • Approves studies and investigations as it deems to be in the best interests of the town.
  • Creates non-compensated advisory boards and appoints each member.

Time commitment: Terms, hours, and compensation:

  • Member- 4 years, $9741/yr. in 2023
  • Member/Supervisor-4 years, $30,306 in 2023
  • Meetings held 1-2/month on first and third Wednesday, 6:30-9:00pm. Members review submissions and documents prior to meetings.
  • Training workshops are required and paid for by the Town.

2. Lansing Planning Board Member

Description:

The Planning Board is an advisory and regulatory public body.  Members are appointed by a vote of the Town Board.   Primary responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and approving development projects subject to site plan
  • Performing other discretionary reviews such as environmental quality reviews, and
  • Making recommendations to Planning & Code Enforcement staff and to Town Board regarding the preparation and revisions of Town Code related to planning, zoning, site plan review, signs, subdivision, and other land use regulations affecting community development.

Time commitment: Terms, hours, and compensation:

  • Member- 7 years, Alternate-1-year, moderate stipend and reimbursement for training
  • Meetings held 1-2/month on first and third Monday, 6:30-9:00pm. Members review submissions and documents prior to meetings.
  • Training workshops are required and paid for by the Town.

Note:

During the 2023 & 2024 years, the Town of Lansing plans to revise its zoning code and the Planning Board’s suggestions will be an important component affecting the final codes.

3. Lansing Town Zoning Board of Appeals Member

Description:

The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) is a quasi-judicial public body. Members are appointed by the Town Board.   The ZBA considers requests for relief from or interpretation of the Town’s Zoning Code. The Zoning Board of Appeals has two functions: review of applications of use or area variances and rendering interpretations made by the Town’s Zoning Enforcement Officer.

Time commitment: Terms, hours, and compensation:

  • 5-yearterm for members, 1 year term for alternate members, moderate stipend and reimbursement for training
  • Meetings held on 2nd Tuesday of the month, 6:30 pm. Members review documents prior to meetings.
