Reading of “The Clergy Went Underground”

A dramatic reading of the play, When the Clergy Went Underground, will be held Monday, May 13, at 7:00 p.m. at the First Unitarian Society of Ithaca, located at 306 North Aurora Street. Produced by End Abortion Stigma, the event is free and open to the public.

The play is based on a memoir by the late David Evans, a minister of the First Baptist Church in Ithaca and founder of the Upstate New York Clergy Consultation Service (CCS). CCS provided counseling and information to over 8,000 women from Upstate New York who sought safe medical abortions at a time when the procedure was illegal and often performed under unsanitary conditions by unqualified providers. After the reading, Reverend Richard Gilbert, a retired local Unitarian Universalist minister, will talk about his own work with the CCS.

The event is finished.
